When dentists first start out with their practice, they think that it is just a matter of word-of-mouth and they become successful. This is not true and this has led many dental practices to failure. Dental marketing is very important for this is an industry that is highly competitive and getting ahead of everyone else would require someone to put down their blinders and get the patients attracted to the practice.
First of all, dental marketing would mean to stop thinking as a dentist. Think of who it is that you are trying to attract - other dentists or the patients? Obviously, the answer is the patients so start thinking as one. Think about what they want to see, hear and feel when they first step into the dental clinic. What are their concerns - is it the costs involved, is there pain involved, are the children getting the treatment they deserve and other questions patients think about.
Secondly, think of the patients themselves as individuals. Who is the customer base here - geriatric patients, children, career oriented individuals, are they poor or are they rich, even think about what magazines they may read, can these be placed within easy reach when they are waiting for their turn in the waiting room?
Third, start thinking about how much you are willing to pay for the whole dental marketing. Talk with a financial adviser or with the accountant and determine how this marketing is going to affect the practice if the money involved were very minimal as compared to a substantial amount.
Fourth, the dental marketing plan should not just address one patient base, instead, make it multi-based to address the different age levels and financial stability of the patients. This way, they will respond more positively to the marketing and will get a feel that they are getting the best from the practice. The focus of the campaign should reflect that you are there to truly take care of them, not just their teeth.
Fifth, think about having a website. In today's world, websites are now a must for this is a window into your practice that will be open to all levels of patients no matter the time of day. This way, you not only promote the practice but you offer the chance for the patients the flexibility of being able to connect to you as a dentist. This is also one of the best ways to get more bookings even when the clinic has closed for the day. As for the web-hosting costs, they are very minimal but can be a solution to getting that dental practice out into the world.
